Please Note* NEW

The calendar reflects the expansion of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) testing program under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which requires that all States administer annual tests to assess student learning in grades 3 through 8. In the 2005-2006 school year, NYSED will administer statewide English Language Arts (ELA) tests in grades 3 through 8 in January and statewide Mathematics tests in grades 3 through 8 in March.

Each of the English Language Arts and Mathematics tests in grades 3 through 8 is made up of two or three sessions (depending upon the grade level). The ELA test assesses standards for reading, listening, and writing. The

Mathematics test will assess the newly adopted Mathematics Learning Standards. Both tests will have multiple choice and extended response questions.

The NYSED has indicated that the results of its ELA tests will not be available until August 2006, while the Mathematics results will not be available until late September 2006. Results of the City tests are available in early June. Continuation of the City tests in grades 3, 5, and 7, therefore, will enable the DOE to have the information needed to make decisions under the promotion policies for grades 3, 5, and 7 and to ensure that students, parents, and schools know which children should be invited to the Summer Success Academy and provided with the additional instruction and support to help them meet the promotion criteria.
