PS75Q Student Cell Phone & Electronic Device Policy (2025–2026)

Purpose
To ensure a safe, focused, and respectful learning environment, P75Q follows the NYC Public Schools guidelines regarding student use of personal electronic devices.
🔒 General Rule
Students may not use any personal internet-enabled electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, etc.) during the entire instructional day, unless explicitly permitted under the exceptions below.
✅ Permited Use (Exceptions)
Use of personal devices is allowed only under the following conditions:
- Educational Use: When authorized by a teacher or administrator for a specific instructional activity.
- Medical Necessity: When required for managing a health condition, as documented by a medical provider and approved by the Office of School Health.
- Legal Requirement: When mandated by law.
- Emergency Situations: When a parent/guardian contacts the school to authorize use during an emergency.
- Translation Needs: When no other translation tools are available, and the device is needed for communication.
- Parents/ guardians may reach out to their child’s school building to request an exception not listed. Requests will be reviewed by the principal, and families will be notified of a decision within one business day.
- In emergencies, students may request to use a school phone by notifying a staff member and going to the main office or guidance office. Staff will supervise the call to ensure it follows school protocols, allowing students to contact their families while maintaining a safe environment.
📦 Storage of Device
- Students must store personal devices during the school day using secured storage bins located in each classroom.
- Students will turn in their devices to classroom staff at 8:00am or upon their arrival to the school building. Classroom staff will return devices to students at 2:20pm or upon their departure from the school building.
- Parent Pick-Up: students will turn in their devices upon entering the school building. Students will retrieve their devices when they are picked up by their parents.

📞Parent Communication
Parents/guardians may contact their child's school building during the school day through the main office. Staff will relay messages to students as needed.

⚠ Violations & Consequences
Failure to follow this policy may result in:
- Confiscation of the device
- Parent notification
- Disciplinary action in accordance with the NYC DOE Discipline Code
📣 Damaged or Lost Devices In the unlikely event that an electronic device is stolen or damaged at school, parents can submit a claim to the Comptroller’s office. More information on submitting a claim is available on the Comptroller’s webpage.

periods.
